David did an excellent job of explaining what hard disks on printers are
used for. But he also said: "I don't think any PostScript printer lets you
use its HD as a spooler or for storing recurring jobs." Some do. The EFI
Fiery controllers allow hard disk space for printed jobs, held jobs, and
archived jobs that can be reprinted later on. The Heidelberg DM9110 also
allows for this. Granted, these are expensive RIPs, but you do have the
functionality if you need it.

the hard drive stores user-downloaded fonts, and probably the printer's
operating system. it could also be used to cache rasterized forms if you are
printing variable-data and the software you're using supports it. . I'm
pretty sure it is also used for virtual memory when
rasterizing the PS.
having a HD in a printer used to be a big deal (anyone remember the
Laserwriter IIntx had a SCSI port on it to hang a little 20-30MB drive off
it for font storage but that was when everyone printed via localtalk and
downloading lots of fonts took forever). there are some PostScript commands
for working with the drive directly in the PS Executive but I've forgotten
them.
