the hard drive stores user-downloaded fonts, and probably the printer's
operating system. it could also be used to cache rasterized forms if you are
printing variable-data and the software you're using supports it. I don't
think any PostScript printer lets you use its HD as a spooler or for storing
recurring jobs. I'm pretty sure it is also used for virtual memory when
rasterizing the PS.
having a HD in a printer used to be a big deal (anyone remember the
Laserwriter IIntx had a SCSI port on it to hang a little 20-30MB drive off
it for font storage but that was when everyone printed via localtalk and
downloading lots of fonts took forever). there are some PostScript commands
for working with the drive directly in the PS Executive but I've forgotten
them.
