Hi Ulf Grossmann (and list),
sorry for not replying earlier (just didn't have the time before).
I absolutely agree with you that (digital) proofing is mainly about
carefully measuring. The reason to bring in the GMG software was Bart's
statement that "one percent difference is really TOO MUCH for us".
I've been a user of both GMG Colorproof and Bestcolor for years. For many
applications Bestcolor is an excellent software. OTOH the price you have to
pay for the "extreme" accuracy of GMG's color matches is that is is
virtually always necessary to hand-edit the match (and therefore having a
good knowledge of what one percent of ink means for your particular
printer).
Besides the categorization I gave last week I think the most versatile
system of the ones I'm using is the Epson printer controlled by Bestcolor.
With the development of profiling softwares and the experiences made with
measuring (UV-filter, multiple measurements, knowledge of the stability of
the different systems in your workflow) ICC matches have reached an
out-of-the-box quality which is -- in my opinion and at least according to
my expectations which aren't too low -- no longer inferior to sophisticated
(proprietary) systems in which you either have to put a lot of time (e.g.
GMG) or which the normal user cannot modify at all (e.g. Dupont).
And you're right saying that the Epson 3000 is no longer a state-of-the-art
printer. At least not a printer I'd use when one percent were too much of a
difference for my application. I'd definitely look for a newer model (I
would even tend to question the 5000).
P.S. I'm neither employed by nor payed for my writing by or affiliated in
any way with any manufacturer.
Regards,
Jo Euler
