Could I get some feedback on this product from other users?
The strength of that RIP lies in its JAWS interpreter (BEST uses
GhostScript), its advanced preflight interface (which BEST lacks) and the
superlative production and color correction tools (which makes BEST look
like Microsoft Paintbrush -- sorry guys).
The weaknesses of PosterShop for color proofing, I am afraid, are too many
to make it a worthwhile alternative for critical work.
For starters, some of the LogoCMM built-in are just plain broken. Try to do
an AdobeRGB to CMYK conversion in the RIP and compare that with the same
conversion in Photoshop : it does not get you the same results. CMYK to CMYK
works, though.
Then, there is the issue of calibration and linearisation. Here PosterShop
is thousands of light years ... behind BEST.
And PosterShop Profiler has not created ICC profiles nowhere near the
quality of PrintOpen. So why bother?
Finally, there is the issue of dithering. Yes, as others have mentioned
already, PosterShop's dithering (stochastic is their better one) is really
poor. The sharpness is just not there. At least, nowhere near BEST 'super
enhanced' mode.
So, for my money, I don't recommend PosterShop in prepress. Until Onyx does
something about these.
