Subject: lost in color spaces
I eagerly joined this discussion group several months ago when I was using Photoshop Elements and
PS5 LE. I use a two-year old Pismo PowerBook, one gig ram, ext.SCSI HD for a scratch disk.
The Epson 2000 made my life absolutely miserable. Colorsync seemed to be the answer to a lot of
problems. Colorsync functioned reasonably but not spectacularly well for a couple of days, then it
went dysfunctional, just like most scripting software I have ever used on a Mac. I was still stuck
with archival ink metamerism and increasingly complex profiles to correct perceived color
discrepancies for every display situation. What's a waste of time.
I replaced the Epson 2000 with an Epson 1280, which included a certificate for $300 off the cost of
PS6 as well as a free upgrade to PS7. What a surprise!
My experience with PS6's color-management wasn't much better than Elements and PS 5 LE. Why the
hardware vs. hardware issues? Why was I paying good money for bad output? The PS7 CD finally
arrived.
Surprise! PS7 printed out a perfect Epson 1280 print the first time I used it!
I click "Ignore Color Profile" (my PowerBook screen is set at the brightest setting possible).
That's it. No mumbo-jumbo, no wasted time or materials, arcane profiles nor fatigue-related
mistakes.
I have been told repeatedly that you cannot do color-management on a PowerBook (I suppose the same
is true for PC's?) due to its LCD display and its graphic card. You must have a powerful graphics
card and a huge CRT, right?
Although I am sure to revisit Colorsync sometime in the future I hope I never do. I am relieved at
not having yet another set of barriers, Colorsync or otherwise, obstructing my real-time creative
freedom and enjoyment, and my income .
My life as a digital professional photographer is far less stressful and I credit Photoshop 7 and
the Epson 1280 for providing wysiwyg printing!
