I was told once that the *best* backing is neither black nor white, it would
be 2-3 copies of the printed target layed down in register on the table. The
idea is that what's behind the colored patch is the exact same color. Have I
ever tried it an compared? No.
I personally use the black table with nothing behind (usually). My theory is
that with the black table it's likely to result in a slightly "lighter"
resulting profile which seems to be more "pleasing" to most people as
compared to a profile/proof that's slightly dark. Unless I'm wrong of
course. :-)
