Choices of rips and how well they work are of interest to all.

Guess you are right.

When selecting a CMYK profile and we select "browse" it often goes back

to "default." What's up with this?
Do you mean on the Output side or the Input Side?
*At the output side might be because you have it not set in a quickset
*The profiles are write protected
*You open it via the network
*Ideally import them allways into your media and either use them as default
or select it from the profile list.
If you mean Input side same as mentiones above exept
put allways the input profiles to the appropriate folder
e.g. \onyx55\profiles\cmyk\ for cmyk.iccs

You are right. Basicly it plays no role where they are. But see the
explanation above.
I do browse my profiles only if I'm in a Testing perioud e.g. if I try to
find out which one fits the best.
As soon as I know I allways import them into the media and set it default.
This makes it safer for the operators and minimises failures while the
workflow.
Don't wonder if you see in the icc folder where your custom made icc are and
where you browse to copies of your profiles with an ascending number ~1.icc
/ ~2.icc These are working copies. PosterShop does not touch the original
one.

This appears to be just one more bug.
