I agree that going with direct digital capture is the way to go and skip the
process of film. Using a digital scanning back (such as the PhaseOne) will
yield you better quality than using film and then scanning. Not only will you
have a more efficient workflow, but also you with digital you have a much
greater dynamic range than film and no grain. I have worked with many
libraries, museums and fine art reproduction houses and have made them
believers that film is not the way to go. With the PhaseOne Powerphase FX
yielding a true 10,500 x 12,600 pixels you can reproduce an image to 35x42
inches at 300dpi . It also features full colorsync workflow for color
management. Couple the PhaseOne FX and a sturdy copystand and lighting set up
from Tarsia Technical Industries and you have a solid archiving solution. The
copystands from TTI range in size from 25x32" to 40x60", the also have a
wallmount version for larger sizes.
If you would like more information on this type of system or perhaps would
like to borrow some sample output that we have done comparing film captures
scanned on a Scitex Eversmart Supreme to the TTI/Phase One solution please
email me off list.
