Would a 48MB file res up fine and be comparable to a 150MB scanback file?

Being the owner of a Powerphase FX I wanted to throw in my 2 cents on the
subject. Will the Powerphase be discontinued? Absolutely. As it is with
all forms of technology that are out there today. Just when is anybody's
guess. If this wasn't the case I'd still being sending out my files on
Syquest drives.
As far as the Phase One verses the Betterlight I chose PhaseOne for a couple
of different reasons. One of them being that Betterlight wasn't Firewire.
I feel SCSI is pretty much a dead (or at least dieing) connection protocol
and couldn't see investing in something which was supporting an interface
that Apple decided to drop. When making a purchase in the technology sector
I always opt for those devices supporting the most cutting edge technology.
That at least gives you the advantage of the longest useable life before
obsolesence.
I feel that probably more people are buying (and consequently recommending)
the single shot backs because they are more financially feasible. Most
people just don't have the money to shell out for a back that only works for
non-moving subjects. The single shot backs have more all round use and are
therefore more popular. That undoubtedly is why PhaseOne is putting more
effort in that market.
Frankly, if I were concerned with what stacks up to scanned 8x10
transparencies I wouldn't even consider something that limits me to 48mb -
as great as they are. I'm an old dog myself and grew up in the world of
shooting damn near everything on 8x10. As much as I loved it and hated to
see it go, I eventually had to admit that digital capture can blow it away
in terms of resolution. Aesthetic interpretation is a whole different
matter and really not relevant for your problem.
As far as the single capture backs "rezzed-up" comparing to a scan back file
at original size - nothing "rezzed-up" compares to original. The real
question is what are your specific needs and what are you willing to live
with. Life is full of compromises. It's like what the man at the auto
parts counter said to the young kid - "Speed costs, son, just how fast do
you want to go?"
As far as lights go, tungsten will work just fine. The biggest problems
with the scan backs is having enough light for sufficient depth of field.
We forget just how much light we were cranking out with our large studio
strobes to get f45. Shooting flat art isn't much of a problem though.
I know that's probably more than 2 cents worth but there you have it.
