With BetterLight's software (MAC version - I don't know about their
Windows version) you can embed your profile in the file or not and
you have advanced controls at setting up your color capture for the
creation of profiles. What more is needed to be ICC savvy?
Well the software has to recognize the profile you assign to the camera data
AND recognize the profile of your display and compensate to produce an
accurate preview. The tagged data in the host software and the final file in
Photoshop should look identical. Do they?
There is nothing like a direct question to make one think about what
they are actually doing. I think my experience here has more to do
with learning how to make source profiles than it does in
implementing them.
I can get an "identical" match from the host software to Photoshop if
and when I assign the monitor profile and then convert to working RGB
when opening in PS. Admittedly, I question wether or not this is
good practice and have been meaning to investigate and understand
this further. Comments?
If I assign a "home-made" camera profile and convert to working RGB
then the match is not identical but it is close. I think this has
more to do with the quality of my camera profile than anything else.
Also, I believe I get the same results when I embed the profile from
the "host" software. Again, I believe this is due to the quality of
my profile.
It appears to me that the BetterLight software is doing everything it
needs to do in order to build and use ICC profiles. In most cases, I
have found the shortcomings have had more to do with the operator
(me) than the software.
I have been meaning to set the time aside to get a handle on creating
source profiles which is the weak link in my profile chain. I have
never focused too much energy here because it hasn't been important
to my work flow.
