Can I just get the chocolate without giving you my answer? Seriously, the
absolute best results I ever got of the EPSON StylusRIP 4.1 which was
driving my EPSON 3000 (up until recently) is when I profiled it as a CMYK
device but took out the black when generating the profile, leaving the RIP
free to generate its own black. As you know, sending CMYK in, whether on the
StylusRIP or the QuickDraw/GDI drivers -- as long as it's got the EPSON name
somewhere on it, the data is first converted to RGB. So what's the point of
insisting? Why not let these drivers control the black generation as they
will do it anyway? I don't know how many boxes of all kinds of media I've
waisted over the years trying to profile these machines as pure RGB devices.
For color critical work, I don't use the EPSON's drivers anymore as I have
access to RIPs who directly support my printer : controlling the ink limit
and linearization is key. Otherwise, it's just pleasing colors.
