I just went through a round of profiling my 1270 and 1280 mostly to cure
some shadow detail issues with profiles I had made using the NCA setting.
I've made smooth profiles in the past using auto or photorealistic setting
under color settings, but as you say, the results were a more restricted
gamut. In recent tests I was using the Vivid setting under color settings
(MediaStreet Epson replacement dye inks on Epson Photo Paper). My first few
attempts looked great... Smoother shadow detail without the reduced gamut.
However my spectro died during the process and has been sent off for repair
so I'm really not through testing this. You might want to give it a try.
