Quality of calibration
Quality of calibration

After a number of frustrating weeks attempting to bring our color
calibration in the studio to a higher level of accuracy, I'd like to ask
some questions of the group. These questions are ultimately and
understandably subjective, but I'm very interested in hearing any opinions
about them.
1. Do your monitors (Trinitron, Diamondtron and the like) that are
calibrated and profiled (with Colorblind, Optical/Photocal, Spyders and
Sequel instruments) generally display an inaccurate gray ramp - differing
color casts in adjacent areas? Would you call the difference between what
should be on the monitor and what is "critical?"
2. Do your printers (Epson, Fuji, etc.) that are profiled show any color
inaccuracy in the gray ramp or in the everyday printing of images?
3. Especially for photographers, designers and independent pre-press shops:
Do you find that your color files are accurately reproduced in commercial
CMYK reproductions?
Again, I know that these are subjective questions, but I'm looking for
opinion - whether the workflow is predictable, workable, entirely
frustrating or different on a case by case basis.
As for us, we have not found a monitor/software/calibration tool combination
that gives us an acceptable degree of quality. (Barcos are not an option for
us because of the price.) We've found that the printers are the most
accurate, especially profiled Epsons. Finally, we've found a correlation
between the quality of the CMYK press and the quality of the final color -
not surprising, but the lower-end the shop, the lower end the final output.
Again, thanks for any replies.
