I wouldn't expect it to just assume sRGB. That's a bad idea for quite a
few digital cameras out there. My understanding is that iPhoto 1.1.1 now
supports EXIF data which includes a profile intent tag for either sRGB
or
"other" and quite a few cameras that are embedding EXIF data are
specifying sRGB. So perhaps that's the reason you feel that iPhoto is
assuming sRGB.
My test are were TIFF images coming from a film scanner. If I use a
profile that nicely captures the gamut of, say, E6 film, the colors are
all wrong when imported into or printed from iPhoto. The same image
converted to sRGB before import looks correct. So, iPhoto may not be
assuming sRGB but it is definitely ignoring the embedded profile and
assuming something that isn't too far from sRGB.
In any case, I've written off iphoto as a useless toy application so I
don't much care, but if I were on the colorsync team at Apple I think
I'd be embarrassed by the product.
