I think there is a lot to keep in mind when you go about building a
profile. Epson provides you with a number of setting in the paper
setting such as Glossy Film, Photo inkjet and so on. I have thought of
these as a sort of crude ink limiting. My belief being that one would
put less ink on a film than a paper. I have no empirical data to
support this however. There are only a couple of these setting that
epson has provided us. However there is now a wealth of papers and ink
that no one imagined when the drivers were written. These are not even
epson products so why would they even want to support them. This in
mind I approach the problem in this way. I print a linear patch set and
look at it. I will make a adjustments until I think it as good as it
can be by adjusting the printer settings. No color adjustment just
paper setting. I want separation throughout not looking at color
critically yet. I feel if this is done well that my profile will have
to do less work latter. Than I print out my patch set and measure very
carefully. Build Profile. Print out a test image tweak repeat until
I'm satisfied.
I think the value of getting a good linear set is crucial. In an ideal
world we would have control over how much ink is put down. For the
meager cost of inkjet printers though I can't expect the world. When
the newer Epson printers like the 1280 came out, I was having a terrible
time trying to profile one with a very glossy paper popular with
photographers. I went back and looked a the linear set and saw it was
getting blocked up. After making some adjustment in the printer setting
to improve it, my problems disappeared. I was following a method
instead of looking at what was happening in front of me.
So with the huge amount of options in papers and inks and the limited
amount of printer controls you have. I think it would be foolish to
expect any one way to work in all situations. Despite my wealth of
tools and software, continued reading learning; it still gets down to
"does this look correct". If it does than thats what I'm going to do,
until it doesn't or until I find a better way.
