Its true we don't give out the complete RCI documentation to everyone -
even to those who beg. (In fact asking someone who does have it to send
you a copy, is asking them to release a document that specifically says
not to redistribute.) Why would we be such stonewallers, so customer
unfriendly?!?!
The problem is access to the codes is a lot like giving a Formula 1
racer, to someone who hasn't learned to drive a race car. They may be
able to get it going, but things get dangerous at 220mph. On more then
one occasion someone has used a RCI command and wiped all the reference
data out of the instrument, or reset the drive motors, or changed some
other "innocuous" setting and then it doesn't read - or worse appears to
read but does so inaccurately - and these are experienced race car
drivers. There are a lot of interesting ways to "modify" the way a Dtp41
runs. In addition, releasing the command documentation generally results
in a number of phone calls, emails etc. on the best way to proceed -
perfectly valid for a software developer, very difficult to support for
every DTP41 user however.
So to try and strike a balance, X-Rite released the ToolCrib software
which allows easy access to some of the more commonly requested
features. In addition, I have tried to supplement this with FAQ's on the
web to make ToolCrib even more useful. Alas, as I believe the original
poster noted, this is not currently OSX native (does work in classic
though.) The good news is we are working on a new version which is OSX
native, and adds a number of features people on this list have asked for
- including a way to see the codes we send so you could do it in another
application if you really wanted to. Unfortunately it will be awhile
before it is released, as its release is parallel to some other
releases...

There seems to be some reluctance about handing this info out...
