I've only seen the slight variations between the Best or normal settings on
my scanner. In fact the Circons are sharper without the autofocus engaged
(of course if the image isn't on the platen then you'll have to use AF) but
the over-sampling in Best mode can produce a very slightly better color.
So you're saying that this works on the drum scanners or the high end flat
beds too?
Using the shift key to pick up white and black points for full base density
will give you a very quick result but you'd be best to avoid the clipping
that you'll get by doing it this way. If there is a standardised film preset
one could run through actual densiometric analysis and save the associated
base densities as presets. Problem is photographers are almost never
'standard' and the choice of exposure on the film, latency, flare,
processing, can , as you know make the best 'film presets' unsuitable.
The nice thing is in Newcolor 7000 you can correct everything in 16+bit
precision before fine scanning with the rgb GUI over Lab. Unfortunately it
won't run on anything but the top end equipment.
