This can help to assure the sampling is representative of the larger whole,
but does nothing for the issue of texture adding sheen, highlights, and
shadows to the colors. This tends to reduce color saturation by adding both
highlights and shadows into the mix, while whites tend to be darker from the
shadows, and their color tint may be reduced by the highlights, while the
blacks tend to be washed out from the highlight addition. Grays may be either
lighter or darker depending on whether the highlights or the shadows are more
dominant. This is based on both the texture (shadows) and the sheen
(highlights). The lighting condition prints will be viewed under is a
consideration in determining what is the "right" reading. Single source
raking lights will accent shadows and highlights, while more diffuse or more
perpendicular light will reduce them.
