Paul,
I've not seen any public takers, so I'll take a shot:
CMYK is a dangerous beast to change because you have to worry about TIL, BG,
and UCR/GCR issues. In my workflow, images that existed before Photoshop 5
are treated as hostile witnesses. Basically, I make sure that they remain
untagged and unmanaged during production. This means that I open in
Photoshop, choose to ignore color management, and then save as EPS. This
method, of course, assumes a PostScript workflow, but that's the only
workflow that I live in.
I've tried to color manage legacy CMYK in the past with mixed results
(although the SWOP v2 is a good profile for CMYK that came out of Photoshop
2-3-4-5 default Printing Inks setups).
