ColorQuartet (Software for driving ScanMate scanners) has excellent tools for scanning color negatives. We have been scanning negs for years with results comparable to transparency scans. They do take more time, and we charge a small premium (+ $20 per scan).
I do not know if the software can be adopted to drive other scanners. Anyone?
