On the other hand, application and printer developers (at least me, I'm
not aware of any other printer developers posting on the list) say they
are not aware of a "bypass ColorSync" API.
I have yet to talk to a developer who has heard of it, but the thing
is, there are lots of APIs on this OS, and there are lots of developers
and only a few of which need to know about this API. I'm convinced it
exist, but I can't say with any certainty that it's actually being used
in any applications or printer drivers because I'm not involved in
those projects. But based on the results I'm getting, the expected
transforms are occuring. Now it's possible with the proprietary color
management there is something additional going on, and THAT'S what
Epson's warning is referring to (that ColorSync + proprietary color
management is occuring).
I hope my postings have not put anyone off. That has never been my
intent. It's just that the engineer-geek part of my brain tries to set
technical issues straight when they don't look right. :-) That and I
try to contribute technical info when it looks like it might be
helpful, as there don't seem to be many other people from the developer
side of the fence on the list.
Suffice to say, it's a work in progress (the whole OS, not just the
color aspect) so even if we knew exactly how it behaved today (as well
as every combination of 3rd party software and hardware) it will behave
differently down the road. At some point it will surely stabilize, and
then documentation will get better too. One big advantage of the
incorporation of CUPS now is that Apple is not responsible for its
documentation. Something I keep hearing from developers as a major
criticism of OS X is the lack of really good detailed documentation in
a variety of areas. Take a look at CUPS documentation - it's not light
weight.
