Eric,
I too use Optical 3.5, iOne Match for monitor, iOne with ICC Display 2.1,
and Prove It! 2.x to calibrate my DiamondTtron 900u.
The best, best way I have found (that satisfies my humble needs for now) is
to override whathever the profile does, with either Prove It! or ICC Display
(both come from the same brain, more or less), with their LUT curves
adjustments.
I used to test my monitor profiles with Photoshop, my trusty DTP-92 and
ColorShop. I would put out some Lab color in a new Photoshop document that I
would then measure with Colorshop, in Lab (working RGB would be MonitorRGB
-- AbsCol or RelCol I think made no difference?). That was one way I could
build some confidence in my monitor profiles.
But, lately, I had my DTP-92 checked against Canada's Institute of Standards
and Measurements (the equivalent of NIST for Canada) and we found that my
DTP-92 was pretty sharp in the blues but not so great in the reds and
greens. So I went out an get an EyeOnePro. (X-Rite will be coming out with
another monitor measuring instrument this fall but I just could not wait).
Before I got my EyeOne, I tried ICC Display with my Spectrocam. But the
quality was not great? I tried also (many times) my DTP92 with OptiCal 3.6
but there was still something left to be desired although it was better than
ICC Display with either my DTP92 or the Spectrocam. (Avantes still has not
worked out that ridiculous bug that exagerate the reported luminance).
Anyhow, I ended up "matching" some standard images I have with the LUT
curves part in Prove It! / DTP92, thus altering my monitor profile to suit
my visual judgement (bad ICC, I know, I know). But that worked well. I was
rid on any lingering cognitive dissonance.
Since I got my EyeOnePro, I used that instead to calibrate and profile my
monitor. At least it has the merit of working under OSX. The colors seems
decent but I have not had the time to truly satisfy my curiosity about the
quality of the profile by putting the profile through my standard suite of
test images in Photoshop and comparing under a GTI D5000 viewing booth.
FYI, I calibrate to 5000K and 2.2 gamma.
