Bruce is definitely correct about the benefits of a large aperture measuring
device. I've even used an X-Rite 938 spectro with the 20mm kit to build a
few profiles with good results. There's actually a company in NH that builds
custom XY tables and could probably rig the 938 to read "unattended". On
another note, there's another thing you should consider when working grand -
Heat. Grand format presses using DOD cure with either heat or UV - the vast
majority using heat. This means that a heating system must span the width of
the machine, which can be up to 16ft. Even small fluctuations/variations in
plate temperature can cause differences in dot-gain, which can cause a
variation in your target colors and potentially lessen the quality of your
profile. Consider printing multiple ICC profile targets over the width of
the machine and averaging them all together - this will do 2 things for you:
1) Compensate for variations in heat (dot-gain) across the machine
2) Compensate for some errors that are caused when trying to read large dots
Ultimately, doing this will yield much more accurate data that can be used
to build a better profile. There's a ton of other issues that I'd be happy
to discuss with you off-line and it is likely that I may have some
experience with your particular printer. Buzz me if you like.
