ImagePrints own black channel generation.
I have a feeling that what you say may be true as long as you are using one
of the ink sets that they specifically support. However I don't see how
that works if you've got the printer loaded with an ink that performs
substantially different from what the RIP is expecting. I'm looking for a
way to accurately profile and use a 1270/80 loaded with third party pigment
inks. I tried profiling Generations 4 inks in a 1270 as RGB through the
ImagePrint demo version (had to print the target really huge to avoid the
demo watermark during measuring the patches). ImagePrint only lists dye
inks and one particular grayscale set as supported in that printer. Maybe
(likely) I'm making a mistake somewhere, but the results were even worse
than profiling the standard RGB Epson driver. One obvious error is that the
patch on the target which should indicate max black is nowhere near as dark
as what I know that printer/ink setup is capable of and it changes fairly
dramatically depending on what printer resolution is chosen to print the
target.
When I have time, I'll try profiling as a CMYK device and see if I can get
more predictable results. I do like the features offered by this RIP and
can see where it could be especially useful with a large format printer.
