If you do not use "Advanced Mode" in color settings, what is the selected
Intent - a default? <
Alison - from memory the default 'out of the box' colour settings render
intent is set to Perceptual, but the profile has to have this option or
Relative Colorimetric is probably used even if Perceptual is chosen. For
example, 'profiles' of the legacy Photoshop CMYK set-up are RelCol and the
Perceptual intent does not render as a true perceptual as in most 'proper'
output profiles.
Photoshop 6/7 make things a lot easier - yes, you set-up the global render
intent which applies to the image/mode command...but even better is the
Convert to Profile command! You would be converting from the working RGB to
the supplied profile - but you have a checkbox so you can decide on a case
by case basis to choose RelCol or Perceptual, which is independent of colour
settings.
So forget the old mode command option and have a look at C2P, no more
guessing or wondering - your eyes and the CMYK numbers preview will tell
all!
For converting RGB to CMYK AbsCol is not usually used - it is more for
softproofing or hard copy proofing where you simulate the media white.
Hope this helps,
Stephen Marsh.
