If we're talking about a web-type of printer, I would go about trying
to "certify" my own proof myself, with colorimetric data, comparing my
simulations to TR-001 published data.
But if we're talking about an sheetfed-type of printer, I don't I would
bother very much. I would stick to TR-001 conformance for now and
later, when GraCol X comes out with the help of CGATS, that's what I
would use for "certification".
Otherwise, this whole certification process is what I call in french
"de la poudre aux yeux". Yes, it is excellent for analog proofs (and
maybe some IRIS) but I don't know too many digital proofs that are
documented as "certified". One thing I notice is that a ColorArt is
very similar in gamut to TR-001? Not wonder it is SWOP certified. But
what does it say for sheetfed?
So, if I worked with a sheetfed printer on a regular basis, you can be
sure that he would have long printed some CMYK target for me that I
would have made profiles from. That way, I could tell (if it's the same
paper and ink he uses) what color to expect from him (her) in my EPSON
proofs.
Not an ideal but it should work.
Another idea would be to test "US Sheetfed Coated v2" from our friends
at Adobe. Chris Cox told me once that this profile is worth every
penny. I hate using stuff that are not documented. The only thing I
seem to notice when I use that profile (seldom) is that it has a gamut
very similar to a good old Matchprint...

I was just wondering if anybody out there using these wide-format
inkjets
(Epson, HP, whatever) and accompanying RIPs (take your pick) has met
any
resistance from printing companies claiming they are not "certified"
proofs, at least compared to a IRIS or MatchPrint or Approval. My
sense is
that fewer and fewer people are using these much more expensive
processes
and going with the significantly cheaper inkjet/RIP combo. I'd be
curious
to hear anybody's experiences when bringing these proofs to their
printing
companies.
