Whew...keeping track of these pissing matches is hard on the eyes. ;0)
But, being a kind of Roland kind of guy I figure it's just about time
to wade in here with my own comments on some other comments flying
around the room.
That said: IMHO a study is a study is a study. Hardware can be
calibrated to a pre-determined and averaged range specification. An
ink/media output profile can be averaged to fall within this
specification. Linearize each device, print and measure to calculate
deltaE can describe this area of testing specification. To put the
results into context: modern manufactured inkjets can be calibrated
tightly and tested as a group with a low deltaE as a testament to the
anal qualities many of us possess when it comes to hitting the magic
numbers most common users don't even quantify as measurable. Face it
guys. We're all a bunch of whackos.
Also, IMHO, Imageprint's profiles are the widest, and probably the
cleanest RGB output profiles I've looked at. But taking saturation
into consideration they are shallow in the L. Their
ep7600_photo-rag_ECWF.icm compared in ColorThink (1.1) to my
F8_CRBW_QV.icc is about 25 percent wider and 30-40 percent shallower
respectively. That Imageprint may have taken common user needs in an
RGB softproof-print-workflow and removed linearization and ink
limiting overall from the user's end is an idea worthy of
consideration and not entirely unlike how Epson and others try to
address the common user. It is only likely the higher end user will
want, expect, or demand more and thus pay more for it.
Cris is right when he says Lin and Pro can't solve any particular
inkset's inherent metamarism or stability, but Graeme is also right
when he counters that Lin and Pro bring a lot of media into
production, primarily because much of what is called 'metamarism'
'motling' 'cockling' these days is often a direct result of
over-inking. Linearization (and ink limiting) brings a lot media
online that otherwise wouldn't be. If ImagePrint does that behind
scenes and also provides support for the common user then good on 'em.
I ordered the Imageprint demo because of this thread: not just to
compare and/or contest it, but to potentially offer an alternative
for those I know beating their heads against the Epson driver and
other more expensive means to their ends. Not necessarily my own.
I also expect that in the next few years there will similar
discussion and disagreements over the 'different' approaches taken by
new and old players on the block. I would only hope that the threads
are addressed to this list first and 'clipped' somewhat less than the
eyesorry quotations streaming before thine eyes. I've lost track of
who all the players are...;0)
Keep your good humor guys...the sandbox always seems smaller when
you're sitting in it.
