Isn't profiling going to set your inks and paper and printer in line with

Nope, Profiling will not set papers in line with each other. It will
properly convert the color values of your image to what can be reproduced by
your printer and paper combination. All papers have a different gamut and
ink limit.

Jets clog, print-heads get old, temperatures change, there are a number of
things that can affect your printer

Profiling will go a long way to keeping your color consistent but if you
linearize regularly you will keep your profile consistent and not have to
reprofile.

How does linearization put the printers hardware and parts back to the

Is linearization just a black generation profile of the printer?
Linearization establishes the densities for individual ink channels. What I
always do is reduce the densities about 5% from maximum so I always have a
target that I can reach when I re-linearize. As the printer changes I can
just re-linearize (which takes less than five minutes) rather than
re-profile (which can take an hour).
