You have to remember that device calibration and color communication are two
different things. The purpose of calibration is to keep a device running the
same way all the time. With a good calibration system, you will be able to
produce consistent color output. However, calibration does not help you
deliver accurate color to the device - this is where ICC comes in. An ICC
profile of a device is a characterization of a device's color behavior.
Using an ICC profile, we can format output data (RGB in the case of the
Pictro) to achieve accurate, predictable color output. Profiles can further
be used to simulate one device on another (proofing). Basically, once a
device is profiled, it becomes part of a color network on which everybody
speaks in color.
In summary, calibration gives you output consistency and ICC plugs your
device into a color system. Use them both together and you can get
consistent, high quality, color accurate, predictable color output.
