In a nutshell, the device internally produces a print with known values (in
the case of the PG, I think it's just density values of Cyan/Yellow/Magenta)
and there is an on board calibrator (again I think it's just a densitometer
on the Fuji). The internal electronics insure after reading the target that
the device is placed back into "factory defaults" or some kind of standard.
If the device drifts, or in the case of the Fuji, you change donor which
varies, this process places the device back to a known condition.
So the process is closed lopped in that it's all built into the device and
designed to insure that device is always running in a consistent fashion
despite the fact that media varies so much from lot to lot.

Open loop would be more like a Kodak dye sub or even Epson ink jet where we
all hope the device and media remain very consistent so that our profile
(and resulting output) is always on track.
