Hi Roger,
In regards to your message:

"adding cherry on the icing"?
For me, where my work rarely requires critical colour matching, but where I
do want both the best possible image quality and the shortest path to get
there, the answer is a qualified yes to the above. Custom camera profiling
for a different photog might also mean better colour matching (or, more
specifically, hue matching) than is possible out of the camera, but as I
don't shoot for catalogs or similar applications where the printed photo
needs to closely resemble the hue/brightness of the sweater or couch or
whatever, this is only a secondary factor for me.

through custom profiling. But what about neutrality?
Hmmm, I'd really have to go back and look at before profile/after profile
renditions of a ColorChecker or other object with black/gray/white neutrals
before I could answer this one with confidence. That is, I can't say that
I've struggled to achieve neutral images with any of the current models I've
shot with, including the Nikons, but your needs may be more critical than
mine.
