I see only two sides to this discussion:
1. Profiles are great.
2. It is a visual process and we do not really want a perfect copy: Adjust for taste.
Since sensors and software varies, why not profile the camera for a known white
balance and then use that as the default? That would remove sensor to sensor
variations, linearize them and presumably create an image that is closer to a
"standard" one.
If it is an evening shot, it will be too red but that would also be true without
profiles, so nothing is lost. If there is time, perform a white balance.
At the end, the images that needs fine tweaking can still be adjusted as before.
Besides the cost and time of the profiling, wouldn't this be the best of both worlds?
