They are both very good products but I prefer ProfileMaker Pro because I
find the entire set of modules much more useful. For example, the
MeasureTool has some features like statistical data from the same sample set
that I find very useful for checking if a device is drifting. The averaging
of data to build a profile is much more powerful than Monaco. I think the
ability to build profiles using (for the current version) several lighting
conditions (with custom coming in the next version) useful for people that
are profiling for specific viewing conditions. I think ProfileMaker has a
slight edge in at least RGB output profile quality, especially with regard
to issues of very saturated blues staying blue.
Next week I'll be teaching a CMS class for three days and once again, we
will use one output device and Spectrophotometer to compare a number of
packages (including BasICColor which wasn't working at all with my
Spectroscan and is in serious need of a GUI). I'll also use ProfilePro,
PrintOpen and any other OSX savvy profiler I have in my arsenal. I usually
let the students pick a "winner" based on a single sample image. Monaco and
GretagMacbeth have always ended up as the top two picked for the last few
years of this class.
I think the two packages you are inquiring about are the best products we
have at this time and they seem to leapfrog each other with each new
release. So you can't really go wrong with either. I'd figure out what
Spectrophotometer you want to use. I really love the GretagMacbeth iCColor
unit but only ProfileMaker supports it at this time so that's a point in the
PMP camp for me. I'd love to see more companies support this unit because
it's really fast, small and easy to use Spectrophotometer.
I haven't used my Spectrocam since the EyeOne came out. It was "crippled" so
it couldn't deal with displays since the company infringed on a patient of
GM's. Not a good sign. I've profiled more output devices with UV issues than
you can shake a stick at an the EyeOne (and iCColor) which don't have UV
filters haven't had a single issue. That's another really nice feature of
ProfileMaker Pro is how it can detect UV and informs the user and allow them
to take action in the profile building. It works REALLY well!
