A co-worker had a question about Ill 10 and color management.
If he creates a new RGB file (in his Lightjet profile) but has to place and
embed a CMYK/RGB image(with or without a profile) when or if Ill converts the
image file to RGB.
Mostly we save an Ill file as an eps for the rip, or he has tried to print to
a mock folder.
He's trying to smooth out a work flow for the Lightjet before he sends the
file to the rip. IOW when and how to convert files to the lightjet profile so
all image and vector colors are the same profile.

1. Don't create the "working" Illustrator file in the "output" space of the
Lightjet. A common working space for the Lightjet is ColorMatch or sRGB.
Softproof the file via the Lightjet profile from the service provider and
adjust a copy of the Illustrator accordingly, if necessary.
2. Before placing the imports, normalize all of them into the same working
space as the Illustrator file.
3. Save the Illustrator with the working space profile. Done...
...but there's always more.
If one has to get close to, or match, a Pantone for instance, the display
softproof may not be good enough. Find how those Pantone choices will
reproduce on the Lighjet by looking at a chart prepaired in advance or order
a proof.
About the RIP, there are as many ways to set-up the color management of the
RIP as there are on your desktop. If it's well managed, you can place an RGB
TIFF, RGB EPS, CMYK TIFF, and CMYK EPS photo in the same Illustrator file and
all will look identical on output and Pantone colors should be acceptable
too, limited to the gamut of the media, of course.
Remember, it's the job of the RIP to rasterize and to convert to the output
profile, not yours, (unless you have some sort-of "understanding.")
There are some issues concerning transparency, and touch-colors, but let's
save that for another time.
I hope this helps.
