printing digital files
printing digital files

I'm on the photography end of the printing process. I have a couple of
Olympus digital cameras that I use and I love them. I get great color when I
print them at home on an Epson C80. Well, good enough for home use and
drafts, putting images up on the web and generally getting the images where
buyers can get the idea. And the buyers really like the images.
Here's the catch. I know nothing about what needs to be done to a digital
file for professional printing, offset and whatever high quality, high
volume production processing. Most of what I find is about how to print cute
photos for the family - not how to get the file the way a professional print
place wants it.
There seems to be a difference between delivering a print or slide, or
providing a digital file. (Yup, I was here once before about a printer
saying my digital files were coming out all gray on his Scitex/Heidelberg
setup.) Since the images that finally did get produced have been so well
received, we'll definitely be at this again. I'm needing to know everything
from snapping the picture in the camera to getting the file to a
professional printer without the agony we went through last time getting the
files printed.
(Why is there such a difference, and difficulty with a digital camera file?)
My life will be good if I can get this part of the process straightened out.
I'm pretty good at Photoshop, where I touch things up. I have a Mitsubishi
Diamond Plus 91 monitor, 6 years old.
Thanks for any help about what a digital photographer needs to know to get
the right stuff to a professional printer.
