I believe wp and bp should not be set for each image. Because, once a
"calibration" is arrived at by setting the response of the scanner to the
three patches of the IT8 target (GS0 at rgb250, GS23 at rgb8 and GS10 at
rgb127 -- for print) that response should be the same for all originals of
the same emulsion. Whether that is true in practice is another story.

We have some Epson 2400 and 3200 in the university I teach. In the little
time I have to show my students the basics of scanning (we use Epson Twain
module for simplicity even though SilverFast is better) I tell them to scan
"full range" in 48 bits in the scanner driver and then "calibrate" the image
with Levels in Photoshop. The response of those scanner is not consistent
enough to warrant trusting the scanner driver in my experience.
