ColorSync services are there for applications to take advantage of.
Maybe
you're advocating for more 'intelligence' at the system level:
Exactly. Basicallly, I'd like to be able to set all generally sensible
parameters at the system level.
While a good idea in theory, in practice practically no applications
use the currently available system level settings. Even Apple's own
applications seem to ignore these settings, despite the ColorSync
panel's description saying they will be used for untagged documents. If
Apple's apps ignore it, I don't see how we can expect 3rd party
developers to do so.
2. Offer the choice at the correct level. I wouldn't care about
Photoshop telling me that it uses the display specific profile for
displaying my images, because I would always look up that setting in
System Preferences, and simply expect that each app will honor that.
We have had system level settings since ColorSync 2.5 or 2.6, that's
something like five years ago. I can't think of a single application
(except the AppleScripts that come with ColorSync) that I can simply
expect will honor those settings. A few Adobe applications can be
bribed into using these settings, but they're not inherently reliable
on a system wide basis.
