What part is confusing? As it is now, standard Cocoa behavior is to match images to the display's profile. In the case of untagged data, the display's profile is assumed as the source, which means basically that no match occurs.

The part that's confusing is that the documentation states that Generic RGB rather than the display profile is assumed as source, which it clearly is not.

I can't speak for non-graphics-intensive apps developed by other companies, but ideally they should mimic this behavior. If they use standard Cocoa behavior it's inherited for free. Graphics intensive apps like Photoshop will almost surely always behave differently because they'll almost almost allow the user to have more control over color conversions.

I'm sorry, but this is insane. Assuming the display profile as source virtually guarantees that the color will be displayed incorrectly unless it was created in a non-color-managed application on that machine. Moreover, since it's exactly the result you'd get with no color management, it's just adding a layer of redundant options whose only function is to confuse the user, and ensure that they get the same dark muddy web images they've come to know and hate. Assuming sRGB for untagged RGB would at least have given us a fighting chance to display web images correctly. I really hope this changes in teh future, because for now it's a completely useless behavior.
