Not avoiding it, but simply getting better descriptions (profiles) of your
devices...and then using them properly.
Like I said before (as have others), your first step should be a good
monitor calibration package. They've gotten so affordable now (the new
Gretag MacBeth iOne product and BasICColor are two good ones in the $200
range) that there really is no excuse to not calibrate your displays.
After you get that locked down, then start looking at your printer
profiles. Custom ones will almost certainly be better than the ones that
ship with the printer.
