Hi all,
I have some problems with achieving soft proofing of newsprint in
Photoshop and would like to see whether you guys can give me some
hints.
I custom made a newsprint press proof profile by using the EC2002
testform, GretagMacbeth Spectroscan and ProfileMaker 4.1. My monitor
is a Barco Reference Calibrator V, calibrated to D50 with gamma 2.2.
The monitor is placed side by side to a Macbeth D50 viewing booth for
color assessment. The room is well light-controlled.
What I do in Photoshop 7 (Photoshop 6 is just the same for running
CMS) is make sure the image is assigned with the newsprint press
proof profile, and select simulate paper white for exact matching
with the print out (a same sheet of print out where the ECI2002
testform was cut to do the measurement, and there are some test
images next to the testform).
The problem is the image in Photoshop is seems more washed out then
the exact print out. The black is more pale than the pale black in
the print out. The dynamic range is less than the original print out.
LinoColor or ColorBlind Edit also show the same thing.
This strange phenomenon only occurs to soft proofing those CMYK
profiles with small color gamut, say newsprint or uncoated paper,
where the dynamic range is small. When soft proofing coated paper
stock or cardboard, my Barco is extremely closed to the original
print out. So basically this is not a problem related to the ambient
light or monitor not calibrated.
Any way to solve this?
TCY
