I'm new to this list, but not to color management, thanks in part to
to a great jump-start at an ASMP color management workshop in Tucson by
Bruce Fraser (and a lot of reading/experimentation). I'm using OS X,
1.25 GHz DP Mac, Artisan monitors, etc. I've been primarily on the Mac
platform since the Mac II...
Here's my question.
The Epson 2200 is becoming wildly popular among wildlife/nature
photographers. George Lepp is supplying "custom profiles" for this
printer that he (and his employees) claim are much better than Epson's.
I've searched the archives here, but find no discussion of this. Have
any of the experts on this list checked out the Lepp profiles? Fact
or fantasy? Better than the "canned" Epson profiles? The line goes
like this...
http://www.leppphoto.com/learn/articles/profiles.htm
"Initial testing of the Epson Stylus Photo 2200 printer demonstrated
that the profiles included with this printer were good, but not great.
They weren't as accurate as we had seen with previous Epson printers,
and there was a fair amount of difference between the display on our
calibrated monitors and the final prints.
At about this same time, I had started testing an X-Rite AutoScan
Spectrophotometer (www.x-rite.com) with the MonacoPROOF software from
Monaco Systems (www.monacosystems.com). This is a package that sells
for about $7,000, so it isn't something that most photographers are
going to go out and buy.
My testing showed that the custom profiles were very accurate. I
set them up on George Lepp's computer, and he was ecstatic with the
results. Prints were perfectly matching the display on our calibrated
monitors.
Because the profiles included with the Epson 2200 aren't as
accurate as we have seen with other printers, and because Epson has not
yet provided updated profiles, we are making our custom profiles
available for our readers." There is a 1.7 MB downloadable zipped set
of profiles that seem to work well...
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
