Sony Artisan Problem
Sony Artisan Problem

I just received my new Sony Artisan last week, and the quality of the picture is gorgeous. However I have been unable to use the calibrator or calibration software -- either version 1.0 or 1.1, running either Jaguar (my default 10.2.3 or a specially installed partition of 10.2.1 created to test the problem -- with no importation of any other pre-made user files from my working system) or OS 9.2.2 (booted or Classic) on my dual 1 GB Quicksilver machine.
Apple System Profiler recognizes both devices, and I've taken care in testing to remove any third-party USB devices. The monitor USB goes straight to the port on the G4. On launching the Artisan software, I get a Fatal Error alert (#1115 on version 1.1 or #4 with version 1.0, in either Jaguar or 9.2.2).
On installation, I followed the recommended procedure of having neither USB cable attached, installing, and then rebooting.
Sony tech support has so far been unable to resolve the problem. The last person I spoke with (in the Professional Graphics department) was very helpful in working through the issues, although to get there involved having to go through a barrage of less knowledgeable support -- one person assuring me that Sony doesn't provide any software for the Mac, and that I should call Apple, since it must be their problem.
If anyone has a clue about this, I would appreciate your insights.

Sony has fixed the Artisan's $1,800 calibrated display's USB issues under Mac OS 9 (unplug 2 USB cables, reboot, plug in cables, rerun software, hope for no errors). The updater is at: [GDM-Cxxx Display Support]

Incidentally, your pre-press readers may be interested to know that this monitor was architected by Karl Lang, formerly the architect at Radius who designed the Industry Standard Pressview / Colormatch reference system for pre-press. He's brought his years of calibration expertise to the Artisan and it shows.

This is not some puck attempt at calibration of any monitor. The software directly controls the video circuitry of the display, including blacks, like a $5,000 Barco, and supports the different colorspaces of D50 (print), D65 (photo) and Web. I replaced a Pressview and couldn't be happier (especially with the USB bugs fixed).
