I'm wondering too if this charts are a good choice to measure Offset
printers
(IT8 still better?), or would be preferable for inkjets only.
It incorporates the IT8.7/3 and proposed IT8.7/4, excluding the
redundancies. For the Seybold Profiler shootout test, I didn't notice
that much of a difference between profiles made from the IT8.7/3 target
and the ECI 2002 target. I'd have to go back through and see if gray
balance was any better with the ECI target - it is possible because it
samples more colors including achromatic ones, than the IT8.7/3 or
IT8.7/4 alone. But since I tested using a Matchprint proof imaged from
a Creo Spectrum, which would have had good linearization, I don't think
any gray balance difference would be significant.
What I do remember though, is that IT8.7/3 built profiles had slightly
less highlight detail. If you're considering a dedicated press run, I
would print both targets and do your own analysis. One advantage of the
ECI 2002 target is there is a randomized version for use with
anisotropic output devices (like a press).
