Rob,
Perhaps I'm foolhardy to dip my toe in this water, but FWIW I did spend all
day yesterday (about 12 hrs) playing with Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), and
comparing images from my D100 v.2 processed with it and with Nikon Capture
(NK) 3.5.1.
What did I find? Well, I don't seem to be able to recover blown-out
highlight detail as well with ACR as I can with NK. I was very suprised at
how much I can get back from NK at times, and ACR doesn't seem to be able to
do this as well.
Secondly, ACR's smoothing renders some things plasticky on the default
setting, so I've been turning it off. That makes for much more noise than NK
with its noise removal turned off. There is presumably some noise
reduction/smoothing going on in NK, even with the noise filter turned off.
Thirdly, I found that a horizontally banded jumper (narrow bands) gave
strange patterns at 100%, just like aliasing at other %'s on screen (the
moire filter didn't remove these). NK on the other hand gave beautifully
smooth bands.
NKs upsampling is perhaps not as good as ACRs; processing in NK and
upsampling in PS gives better results than upsampling in NK.
I didn't compare color accuracy; I leave that to people with more accurate
instrumentation than I have.
Bob Frost.
