People seem to be very emotionally charged about this topic. I have never
profiled a digital camera, but to me, the main issue would be that, all the
companies providing the software seem to use opaque color charts with a very
limited dynamic range. It doesn't seem possible to calibrate the response of
a sensor in the high and low ranges of tones found in the real world, with a
chart that only contains a fraction of the middle tones. I suspect Camera Raw
is addressing this problem in a way that profiling software relying on charts
cannot. So in theory I can see how a "generic profile" like Camera Raw, could
be superior to a custom profile.
In regards to lack of profiling capability, Thomas may be adding that to next
version for all we know. In the meantime if this product makes a lot of
people's lives better (sounds like it is actually) I'm all for it. It's
interesting to me that of all the people I've heard critisizing it, none
have actually tried it.
In the meantime I'm happy with film and scanning, maybe when the next
generation of cameras arrives I'll try out my free version of Camera Raw that
will come with PS8.
