I thought that might be a work-around. Do we really know what the "right"

The D30/60 both have a telltale system that the user can use to review a
capture and see if the highlights have been over exposed (area flashes
black). It is small and may be not the most accurate but it9s still not to
be ignored. The image I sent Andrew had an exposure that ensured the sky
area did not blink black and when converted via Canons own software the
image showed some clipping. With Adobe camera raw the clipping was more
substantial and rendered the image useless. The linear raw version has lots
of subtle detail and this is easily retained if by using a custom profile
3built for use with such images2. ACR also got the white balance completely
wrong which I found very surprising.
ACR has the potential to be very good but as things stand it has limited
usefulness since it simply cannot render borderline images correctly - to
get anything close to acceptable we would need to underexpose by 1 stop and
more compared to film. If we9re now being told that this is the price we
need to pay for automation then screw automation. The fact that we are even
having this debate only serves to confirm that trying to automate something
as complex as digital capture is still not within our gift. When Thomas
wrote ACR his starting point should have been give the user TOTAL control -
he has taken the most basic control away from us - not having the ability to
adequately control the highlights means that were being asked to drive a
Grand Prix racing car without a steering wheel.
