Manual linearization

Hello:

I need to ink-limit and linearize an Iris 3024 manually through Iris FEP
(Front-End Processor) before I can make profiles. Most RIPs I've used for
other printers semi-automate this process but for the Iris it looks as
though I will have to create CMYK step wedges in Photoshop, print them out,
manually measure each step and adjust the values in the LUT in Iris FEP and
repeat as necessary to match input and output values.

I have a few questions that I hope someone can help me with:

1) I have a Spectrolino/Spectroscan. Is there a simple way to use this to
easily correlate Photoshop CMYK % to output %.

2) Would it be simpler to use a densitometer? If so, what mode would be
required (i.e. dot %, optical density, etc.)?

3) In some cases I have seen the same FEP LUT settings used for different
papers (using the same ink-set). Wouldn't it be better to linearize for
each paper separately?

4) What would be the best way to approach manual ink-limiting?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Jim Morris
