Until Epson releases a true CMYK driver and supports a color measurement
device to calibrate to their supplied ICC profiles I won't play the game. I
get great gray balance with 7600 and a RIP because I can control the black
generation in profiling building process and communicate directly in CMYK. A
good RIP also allows calibration using a spectro for optimum tonal
distribution of each color channel and consistency to print conditions under
which the ICC profile is built.
Fiddling with RGB profiles in hopes for gray balance is searching for
the holy grail no mater how many patches you use.
My 2 cents to you and 1 cent to Epson :)
