I know that could be a very stupid suggestion.

But, I has a very old SCSI microtek E6 scanner with a Adaptec card, and I
was try to use in XP enviroment (hold on the guns gentlemans, pls!)...
nothing works untill I run Silverfast.
Well, I always forgot to turn on my scanner in startup process, so once, I
try to run twice the silverfast application, in the first try I get "No
scanner found" window (but I could to listen the sound of "new hardware
found" in that OS), so I try again without restart PS7, and run very softly,
no problem.

It's only a guest.
Hope this help,
