invisible profile in Photoshop

I'm just a humble photographer, not a digital color management wiz. I use film for my shooting which is mostly architectural. I use a G3 with OS 8.6 and Photoshop 5 (yes I know I am a dinosaur). I make it a point never to be the first kid on the block with the latest software/hardware (let others work out the bugs). I calibrate my monitor with the Colorvision Monitor Spyder. My prints are done at my color lab on a LightJet 2000 printer. They recently switched from ColormatchRGB to a custom profile supplied by an outside vendor. They gave me the custom profile to install in my Colorsync folder. My problem is that Photoshop does not recognize that profile when I go into the RGB/Setup. The only ones available are the standard ones that come with the program. I talked to the guy at the lab who is in charge of color management and he gave me instructions for loading it. He said there is a Prefered folder within the Colorsync folder and I should put the profile in there. Only there was no Prefered folder. So I made a "Prefered" folder and put the profile in there. It still didn't come up in PS5. I can do a profile to profile change and the custom profile shows up in that list but that doesn't seem like a good way to work. The lab checked the instructions on the vendors website and they can't figure out why it doesn't work for me. I can select the custom profile as the RGB default in the Colorsync control panel but not as a working space in PS5. Any ideas what my problem is? Am I just missing something here? I suppose I will have to upgrade soon but I hate doing that because it always means hours, days or weeks trying to get everything working again - all that time/money wasted when I should be out photographing. Please help!
